Identity theft from financial, legal, or personal documents costs the UK around £1.7bn every year. Much of this fraud is committed within the business world, which, due to a relaxed attitude to paper disposal, offers the chance for opportunists to challenge the security of any business.

The Data Protection Act 1998 requires all businesses to dispose of information in a responsible manner to prevent any fraudulent use of the waste documents, whether it is a bank statement, invoice, letterhead or even a compliment slip and any non-compliance could result in the imposition of some serious financial penalties since the introduction of new enforcement powers on 6 April 2010.

These new enforceable powers permit the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) to order organisations to pay up to £500,000 as a penalty for any serious breaches of the Data Protection Act.
